SURF FISHING DAYTONA BEACH

Posted by Lauren Yanez on May 3, 2011

did a little surf fishing in daytona beach while on vacation 5-20-2010.caught some bluefish,whiting/kingfish,ladtfish,guitar fish and a pompano. hooked onto some larger fish too but got broke off with the 12 lb test line.was hoping for a shark or 2 seeing how daytona beach area is the shark bite capital of the world – felt fish bumping my leg often while wading chest deep in the water. caught some blue crabs that would hang onto the shrimp till ya reeled them in.used shrimp and whole mullet/baitfish for bait on pampano rigs and wire bluefish rigs -2,3 oz pyramid sinkers,12 lb stren and 8.5 ugly stick rods.
saw plenty of dolphin cruising just beyond the surf but no sharks

We were just north of there and caught some nice Whiting and Pompano. Saw some guys get into Blues but we never fished for them. Also caught some Sea Cats and Croakers.

@ROADSNAKE90ROADSNAKE Bill,
There is always some risk in surf fishing. The main critter that you have to watch out for is the blacktip reef shark. The stingrays at that depth usually are not the deadly ones. In fact, I think the sharks and rays should be worried about you!!! Use steel leader and cut jack crevalle or kingfish. You would be surprised how hard those sharks fight. Get a hook extractor, their bite is still painful. TRUST ME.

@ROADSNAKE90ROADSNAKE Naw brother, you’ll be fine. We locals will swim farther out than where you were at. I mean, they can come in that close and do on occasion, but more often than not they’re farther out than where you were at.

@whybepro i’m coming back to daytona area may 13 for 9 days.

got a question for you -although iv’e been fishing for over 40 years i have no experience with salt water.
i was a little uptight about wading chest deep out at the beach – all the locals fish from shore.

are there any dangers ? standing out in the water like i did in this video ? i mean do sharks or stinrays or any other creatures come in that close to shore?????????????

I tell you, I am a …
I tell you, I am a local resident of New Smyrna Beach. You should have cut the ladyfish into 2 inch chunks. We catch cobia, redfish, snook, decent size tarpon from time to time and of course shark, rather large sharks to be honest. Happy to see a tourist the didnt get hit be a car or attacked by a shark, come back soon.
