What type of fishing line to use for yellowfin tuna?

Posted by genglish on Jun 21, 2010

I was wondering if you use spectra, izorline, and/or flourocarbon line and how far up you splice the flourocarbon if you use it.

If you could also tell if you use jigs or not that would be great!

i got a $5.00 footlong

Where can i rent fishing poles for surf fishing and whats the best charter for deep sea in Destin Fl?

Posted by genglish on Jun 21, 2010

going to destin on my honeymoon looking to do some surf fishing and was wondering where i might rent a rig for the week also i want to take my wife on a bottom deep sea fishing cruise. Not looking for a 5person charter but more like a 60 person big boat drop the line and reel them in. Ive done it a million times in Myrtle but never been to destin. Also what else would be fun for some young honeymooners?

Destin and South Walton County (there is no difference for most people) have a lot to offer you. The best thing I can suggest is to pick up a visitor’s guide when you get here. Almost every gas station carries them and they are free.

There are a lot of charter boats in the City of Destin itself. I’ve never had a bad trip. I don’t recommend any particular captain. Since it will just be the two of you, you shouldn’t have a problem finding a charter to suit you.

As far as fishing pole rentals, I’ve never seen it here. However, a lot of new beach rental businesses opened up here, so someone might. The people at Half-Hitch Tackle might rent or know someone who does [(toll free) 877-369-4360 or at destin@halfhitch.com]. We also have a Bass Pro Shop if you can’t find a rental agency and just insist on doing it (unless your fiance is into it, I would advise against it on your honeymoon). The locals may give you a hard time if you fish during the day. It attacts bullsharks.

Take a day and explore Highway 30-A in South Walton County. It is a beautiful drive with many shops and award-winning restaurants. Go to Cafe Tango at least one night. You will need reservations and it is PRICEY. However, it is one of the few places I paid $150.00 for a dinner for two and felt it was worth every penny. When you make your reservation, make sure to ask for directions; if you blink you will miss it.

Your wife will want to spend a day at Destin Commons and a day at the Outlet Mall. For you, Destin Commons has some good restaurants and bars in which to wait. It also has the Bass Pro Shop and a theater.

Of course, the beach is the biggest draw. Be careful along the road that runs along it. Lots of accidents and lots of children darting out between parked cars. Personally, I prefer one of hte several state parks’ beaches. It costs $2.00 per car to get in, but there are fewer people and the beaches are nicer. Pay attention to the warning flags. we are starting to develope our second sandbar, which means the currents near the shore are strong and unpredictable. Don’t underestimate the amount of UV rays reflected by our white sands, in addition to those reflected by the water.

And at least once while you’re here, order the smoked tuna dip as an appetiser. Trust me.

What type of Lure should i be using in wavy saltwater fishing?

Posted by genglish on Jun 21, 2010

I have started fishing with lures, I have gone twice with them I haven’t caught anything with them :( I am not going to give up though. I used a jig, with a nuclear chicken colored plastic minnow looking thing. Where I fish its really wavy water, what type of fishing lure should I be using?
I was fishing in south texas on a pier in saltwater, also when do i know to use topwater lures, vs. jigs vs. everything else.

Have you tried throwing out any speck jigs yet? My comrades have been catching specks on double rigged speck jigs near Freeport. Chartreuse green and yellow is what they are hitting on in that area. There are lots of different colors to choose from depending on your water clarity in your area. Any bait shop or Walmart along that Tx coast carries speck jigs. I use to catch two specks at a time on those jigs when casting into a school of em. Follow the seagulls feeding on the water and cast out near em, can"t miss catching trout this way. Big saltwater spoons can also catch you some reds as well as specks this time of year. Work the spoon slowly back, bumping the bottom as your retrieving back in. Flounder will hit a slow spoon as well. The tide and waves gives the spoon great action without a fast retrieve. Unless your near an oyster reef most of the bottom along the South Tx. coast(surf) is flat and sandy. When your fishing the bays you have to worry more about the oyster reefs and hang ups. My personal favorite in the surf, between the second and third sandbars, is to use a popping cork with a live shrimp, small mullet, small croaker, or mud minnow. First choice being shrimp. If casting out past the third sandbar, then I fish the bottom with shrimp, small or cut mullet, squid, croaker, or cut up crevelle jack when I’m going for black tip. First choice at this spot is shrimp or small mullet. Tight Lines Feel free to email me for more info 40yr exp

what is the best time of year to go tuna fishing off the coast of WA?

Posted by genglish on Jun 17, 2010

August is good. September is better. Some years it runs into October though the ocean is rougher later on.

http://charterwestport.com/

Ocean and Deep Sea Charters have the most experience. Coho Charters on the boat the Ultimate is good if Phil is geared for Tuna in 2008.

Most trips are 75 to 150 miles off the Washington coast. Sometimes the water moves inshore such that the run to the Tuna grounds is only 50 to 60 miles offshore, though this rarely happens with regularity. If you want closer to shore fishing, you need to go to Depoe Bay, Oregon. http://www.tradewindscharters.com/

If you don’t want to go out and catch your own, there are several seafood companies in Westport including a floating vendor that will sell you a tuna "in the round". That means they will sell you the whole fish. They weigh it, cork it (take off the loins for eating) and discard the carcass for you and pack it in a plastic bag with ice for transport. A 18 pound Albacore Tuna ($2 per pound = $36 plus tax) yields about 8 pounds of pure white loins (About $4.50 per pound solid meat)- Delicious. You can also purchase canned Albacore in Westport or order online from Nelson Crab in Tokeland Washington.

http://www.nelsoncrab.com/ These folks also have fresh boiled crab at better prices than in Westport. Only a 20 minute drive south of Westport. Been doing business with the Nelson’s in person and mail order since the mid 1960′s.

In Westport, try the lingcod fish and chips at the Totem Drive In for a real sea fresh treat. Best "sit-down" meals are at the Isander restaurant. All three meals are good here and it is about the only game in town. Try the steamed clams and the hot Dungeness Crab for dinner.

What is a good bait to use while surf fishing in Florida?

Posted by genglish on Jun 17, 2010

I live in NJ and taking a trip to florida and im just wondering what the best baits are to catch any type of fish in florida. Also if you have specific baits for specific fish please let me know. Im SALTWATER FISHING!!!! thanks

Squid catches everything and it’s momma..that’s the problem with squid. If you just want to catch anything, go with that bait. If you are looking for something better, go with cut sardines. Use the head part for better action. The tail end is good also but doesn’t hold as much scent as the head ( vital organs are nearest the head). Just cut the bait in half, hook it and send it out to Davey Jone’s Locker. ; ) Make sure you carry the right weights ( I call ‘em sinkers but who am I to know?) like pyramids and if you can, spider weights. These will hold the sand better. Also, if you can get your hands on some fresh Mole crabs ( also known as "sand fleas"), you might do pretty well for the day if permit and pompano are in the area. It’s pretty hard for me to get into specifics with you because you really didn’t mention where in florida you’ll be fishing. Wasn’t sure if proposing blood worms would be appropriate but it’s an option. ~good luck catchin’.
